1. Explain the external magnetic-field question

An inductor's description can concern how its magnetic field interacts with nearby circuitry as well as its nominal electrical fields. Coilcraft's EMC discussion describes energy transfer through field coupling. In that context, magnetic shielding addresses the external magnetic-flux path. This explains why shielding is a meaningful construction field for identified surplus inductors, rather than merely another way to describe their inductance. The useful question is what construction the applicable product reference supports, before anyone interprets a short inventory description as a system-performance statement.

Keep that question separate from an observed equipment problem. A former board's noise annotation does not establish the construction of every magnetic component on it, nor does it identify the cause of a reported system behaviour. A seller can retain an inductor's documented shielding identity without diagnosing the old assembly. The distinction makes a component record more precise while leaving field measurements, coupling calculations and circuit-layout decisions outside the inventory classification. This guide does not propose an EMC test or a new design arrangement.

2. Describe the magnetic path rather than the cover

Coilcraft explains magnetic shielding using high-permeability, low-reluctance material around the inductor to form a more closed magnetic path. Its stated purpose is reducing magnetic flux generated outside the component and the associated opportunity for coupling. Preserve that qualitative construction meaning when the exact product documentation identifies it. A covered or moulded appearance alone does not establish the material, magnetic path or manufacturer's shielding description. The function belongs to the documented construction, not to the general impression that a package looks enclosed.

That also means a visible cover and a magnetic-shielding claim should not become interchangeable inventory terms. A photograph can document the exterior of the offered item. It does not reveal every internal material or establish how the magnetic path is constructed. Keep the exact manufacturer descriptor alongside the physical observation, allowing each to retain its own role. If a product reference uses a qualified construction term, preserve that wording rather than silently expanding it into a fully shielded description copied from another series with a similar outline.

3. Keep category and current criteria independent

Magnetic shielding does not replace the distinction between power inductors and common-mode chokes. The existing category guide preserves those manufacturer product types. This article asks about a shielding construction and its external-field purpose. A choke category and a shielding descriptor may both belong in a product record without resolving the same question. Do not assign a winding arrangement or filtering function from the presence of a cover, and do not use a broad magnetic-parts heading to erase a supported shielding distinction.

Saturation current and thermal current are another separate pair of criteria. The related sourcing guide explains their different meanings and conditions. A shielding description supplies neither the inductance-drop criterion nor the temperature-rise basis. Retain such rating information under the actual product's own headings when available, without deriving a current capability from the shielding category. The inventory decision here is preserving construction, not ranking two inductors for an application or predicting their losses, heating or external-field behaviour on a customer's board.

4. Preserve reduction as a purpose, not a measured result

Coilcraft's explanation uses reduction of external magnetic flux as the purpose of the shielding construction. Reduction should not be rewritten as zero field or complete elimination of interaction with surrounding circuitry. The distinction matters when a seller inherits a shorthand description such as low EMI. Keep the manufacturer's construction statement separate from that broader phrase. It can support a technical identity without supplying a numerical suppression value, a particular installation's performance or a compliance conclusion for finished equipment.

For an ICULTRA inductor enquiry, retain the exact series' supported shielding description alongside its product category and any independently sourced rating fields. Preserve whether the item is a loose component or part of the actual assembly offered. An existing EMI or electrical report remains separate evidence for the hardware and scope it identifies; none is produced by this classification. The result is a construction-supported offer that a recipient can assess, without a layout recommendation, a zero-emission promise or a guarantee that the material meets an application's current and interference requirements.

Coilcraft's bounded field-coupling and magnetic-shielding prose supports the qualitative mechanism and purpose. No measured attenuation, zero-field claim, current rating, layout instruction, EMC test or compliance conclusion is supplied.
